Jucheon River, ideal for an early-summer trip

Seoul, Korea – The Jucheon River flows through the Youngwol and Hoengseong area of Gangwon-do and empties into the Namhan River.

Dunnae and Gangnim, on the upper course of the Jucheon River boast beautiful mountainscapes. In the early part of summer, fishing enthusiasts and people wanting to catch fresh-water snails swarm the Gangnim area of the river.

Clear, unpolluted waters and oddly shaped rocks awesomely carved by forces of nature are found in the area. At the top of a rocky cliff is the Yoseonjeong (a traditional gazebo), where the view shows mystically shaped granite rocks strewn around the foot of the cliff.

At the center of the bedrock, there is a whirlpool eroded by swirling sediments and small pebbles.

Follow the brook upstream for about 10 kilometers and you¡¯ll find the Buddhist temple Beobheungsa, one of original five temples of Korea that enshrine true relics of the Buddha. The area is best-known for the temple itself, but the surrounding forest, with its wafting scent of pine and beautiful wooded views, is just as breathtaking.
