In Praise of Abalone: summertime stamina food

Abalone¡¯s popularity is increasing and so is the number of people seeking abalone dishes as a means of maintaining stamina during the heat of summer.

Abalone tastes great and is nutritious, low in calories and high in protein, making it ideal as a summer stamina food. The shellfish is particularly popular among the younger crowd and women, replacing the traditional stamina dishes with the lower-calorie abalone alternatives.

A great place to try out some abalone dishes is Mr. Baik Il Seop¡¯s Jeonbok Yechan (meaning ¡°In Praise of Abalone¡±) His restaurant receives fresh supplies of abalone directly from the island of Wando, South Jeolla Province, so the abalone is very fresh and very reasonably priced.

Basic meals on the menu include abalone haejangguk (hangover soup), rock-pot steamed rice with assorted herbs and abalone, abalone with grilled mince ribs, starting from about 6,000 KRW. For 10,000 to 20,000 KRW customers can enjoy a variety of special dishes such as raw, steamed, or roasted abalone. Other items on the menu include abalone seafood soup, abalone and seafood samgyetang, abalone steamed beef ribs, abalone samgyetang, and abalone seafood and rib stew.
