Come to Namsan, the urban vacation spot

City of Seoul recommends Jangchung Park, Dadame Garden, and Mongmyeoksan Lounge as attractions.

Seoul, Korea – The city of Seoul has recently recommended the recently renovated Jangchung Park, Dadame Garden, the Northern Hiking Trails, and the Korean-style Mongmyeoksan Lounge as summer attractions.

Around Jangchung Park: a restful environment that provides history + culture + ecology

Jangchung Park recently underwent a city-sponsored renovation, prompting reactions about how its appearance and atmosphere have changed. The park is located right by Dongguk University Station, on subway Line 3. This area was once a senselessly littered part of the city, but since the removal of aging buildings and park facilities and replacing foreign pine trees with pines, cherry trees, and dogwood native to Korea, Jangchung Park has become a clean rest area, restoring the natural habitat where history, culture, and ecology can coexist.

The first thing you will notice when you enter the park is a beautiful small brook with lovely areas along its banks and around a small pond with aquatic wildlife. A visit here is like taking a peaceful urban vacation. You can also get a history lesson because the park has many items of cultural and historical interest, such as the Jangchung-dan rock, Supyo Bridge, the statue of Lee Joon Yeol-Sa, the Lee Han Eung commemorative stone.

Dadame Garden, a breezy rest area in the woods

Once you have enjoyed most of the park, if you follow the hiking trail, you will find a beautiful rest area built in the Korean style, peacefully located among the trees. This place is Dadame Garden, a restaurant and tea house which opened in June of this year.

While there were few customers at the beginning when no one knew about it, it is now growing in popularity through word of mouth as a place where you can eat and drink tea peacefully in a wooded area. Here, you can enjoy simple dishes such as bibimbap, noodles, and traditional tea. The most popular room is the wooden-floor room, where the breeze through and the back door provides a view of the waterfall, making it hard to believe that you are in the middle of the city.

New York ¡¯s Central park has nothing on Namsan¡¯s Northern Circuit

Once you pass Dadame Garden, in front of the main gate of Dongguk University there awaits a trail that takes you up Namsan. As you go up on the ridge following this route, you will come to the northern circuit of Namsan. This is Nam San¡¯s main hiking trail, which stretches from the National Theater to the middle of Namsan through the forest and is one of the most beloved trails to those who come here.

On the Namsan circuit, the dogwood and maple trees provide shade for those hiking along the trail. All along the route, observation decks are available for those who want to see a panoramic views of the city.

Mongmyeoksan Lounge, which Nam San surrounds like a folding screen

Mongmyeoksan Lounge, another attraction on Namsan, is a rest area built in the Korean style near the entrance to the Yejang district on the northern circuit. This place, named after Namsan¡¯s official full name, Mongmyeoksan, opened at the end of last year to show locals and foreigners the beauty of Korea¡¯s traditions.

This place has been growing in popularity, especially during lunchtime when office workers in the area come to eat and drink traditional tea, followed by enjoying a short hike on the circuit. Because Namsan stands at the back of Mongmyeoksan Lounge like a folding screen and a small brook and waterfall are at one side of the front porch, it is also a popular photo site. The Namsan cable car is nearby, so you can go to the top of Namsan easily as well.
