What¡¯s the main cause of dry skin in the summer?
Seoul, Korea – Many office workers who spend all day in an air-conditioned environment suffer from dry skin. This is because air conditioners not only cool the air but also remove humidity from the air. Also, because there is much more contact with water during the summer, this adds to the dryness.
Dryness isn¡¯t the only skin problem caused by air conditioning. The air filter of an air conditioner, with its high temperature and moist atmosphere, is a breeding ground for mold and bacteria, and if not cleaned regularly, it can cause bacterial contamination. Once the contaminated air touches the skin, it can cause pimples, rashes, and other skin blemishes.
If your skin is naturally dry, you must pay extra attention to make sure that your skin remains moist in the summer. Make sure not to stay directly in the wind blown from a fan or air conditioner, and use a personal humidifier if you spend most of your day in an air conditioned place.
Also, drink lots of water to keep yourself hydrated. Spraying yourself regularly with moisture mists can help keep your skin from drying out. Eating summer fruits rich in moisture, vitamins, and minerals, such as watermelon, muskmelon, and peaches is also helpful, as are fresh vegetables.
Lastly, while it is normal to take many showers because of perspiration, make sure not to use soap or shower products with high detergency too much. Use moisturizing shower products, and apply lotion after the shower.
