Facial bone-contouring surgery: professional equipment required

Seoul, Korea – During the summer, the number of people wanting to have plastic surgery increases, and many people take advantage of the long seasonal break to opt for such complex, time-consuming surgery as facial bone contouring, including softening the lines of a square jaw or prominent cheekbones.

Because such procedures involve cutting into the face, patients worry about the results. Medical equipment and tools used should be top of the line.

Among the many kinds of equipment available, the spotlight has recently been on the 3D CT scanners and aqua-light lasers. The advantage of the 3D CT scanner is that it shows not just the bone but also the muscles, fat, skin, and even tiny nerves, for a more complete analysis. Also, it makes it possible to create 3D images of the results that can be expected from the surgery. Additionally, the amount of radiation has been decreased by 50 percent compared to regular CTs, greatly reducing any ill effects on the patient¡¯s health.

The aqua-light laser is an FDA-approved bone-cutting laser. While there was great danger of making mistakes when cutting bone with an electric saw, using a laser allows for precision cutting to create a very natural line. Also, the heat from the laser contracts the blood vessels, so there is less blood loss because hemostasis is instantaneous, resulting in less swelling, and the laser kills the germs in the cut, so there is less chance of infection.
